The Schiffbauergasse site has been developed into a modern centre for contemporary culture and innovative commerce in the centre of Potsdam with the help of promotional funds from the European Union
So far altogether 12 projects* have received just under 35 million euros in promotional funding, of which 22 million euros came from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD). Co-Financing was supported by the Federal Government and the State of Brandenburg, the City of Potsdam and private investors, together with funds from InvestitionsBank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB).The total investment for the promoted projects is more than 103 million euros.
The main purpose of the use of EFRD funds in Brandenburg is to improve the region’s competitiveness, which is essential for lasting improvement to the level of income and employment. In Schiffbauergasse a range of very different projects could be realised with promotional funds under the programmes “Reactivating Run-down but Developable Urban (Brown Field) Sites”, “The Joint Task for the Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure” and the “Municipal Cultural Investment Programme”. These projects have created an attractive area in the centre of Potsdam.
The promotional funds were approved by InvestitionsBank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB). As the main promotional institute of the State of Brandenburg ILB supports the commercial sector, education, infrastructure, culture, urban planning and environmental improvement.
With the help of funds from the programme to reactivate run-down urban sites, for example, empty spaces were opened up and redeveloped and the pollution left on the gas works site was cleared. Under the Municipal Cultural Investment Programme the Schiffbauergasse Centre for Art and Socio-Culture (ZKS) was supported, so creating a vital art and culture scene on the site. With funds from the Joint Task for the Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure the cycle path along the river bank, a mooring place for ships and a car park with garage were established, thus creating the necessary infrastructure. Facilities for tourists and a variety of catering establishments were also built up on the site. The Lakeside Marina (Marina am Tiefen See) and the John Barnett restaurant ship are good examples of this. Last but not least commercial premises for the VW Design Center Potsdam GmbH and Oracle Deutschland GmbH were successfully developed.
ILB supported the relocation to Schiffbauergasse of the Internet Sales Division for Germany, Austria and Switzerland of ORACLE Deutschland GmbH with its own funds as well as with promotional funds. The bank’s fully-owned subsidiary Grundstücksgesellschaft “Tiefer See” mbH (GTS) acquired the land and buildings of the former coke separation plant and developed them into a modern office building specifically designed to suit Oracle’s needs.
