SEARCH AND FIND | SCHIFFBAUERGASSE.DE » ABOUT » RESIDENTS Ristorante "Il Teatro"![]() The first modern commercial use of the Shipbuilder’s Lane was documented in 1779. A “Galerie-Holländermühle” (a dutch type of windmill) became famous as the Chicory Mill because rather than grinding flour, it ground a coffee substitute from the root of the “Blaue Wegwarte” (old German word for chicory). By the end of the 1990s, squatters moved into the untenanted building. They cared for the garden and the building along with preventing vandalism and the decay of this unique industrial monument. After thorough renovation, the former Chicory Mill is now used as a restaurant and beer garden, as of late summer 2006. The native southerner Giuseppe Riolo - who already runs a pub called “Pino” with a high reputation in the center of Potsdam, turned the mill into the “Ristorante Il Teatro“. Right beside the newly-built theatre, approximately 150 guests can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine and a beautiful view over Lake Tiefer See from the terrace. Inside the restaurant, in an historical and at the same time mediterranean ambience, there are more than 100 seats. The second floor can be used for all kinds of events, celebrations, and birthdays. The restaurant is open every day from 11:00 until midnight. Giuseppe Riolo also runs the canteen of the Hans Otto Theater.
